Did anyone go out Last Weekend 6th/7th March?

Postby Simon U » 08 Mar 2010, 20:33

Hey guys,

Did any of you lot get out and have a snorkel last weekend? The weather forecast was anything but promising with the prediction of Thunderstorms on both Saturday and Sunday. Wasn't it a pleasant surprise to find out that the North Easterly wind blew all the bad weather down to Melbourne! What a pity for them!

I hopped out to Gordon's Bay on Sunday as it was a glorious day when I woke up!

I'm just trying to upload some photos onto Flickr now so I can share them with you lot.

Let me know if you saw anything if you went out.

I went to Clovelly on the afternoon of the 6th. I'd been worried about the weather as it was raining where I came from but turned out to be lovely. My underwater camera died as soon as I went in the water which was really sad, but I saw:
- senator wrasse (I think)
- stripey fish
- toadfish
- fire damsel
- silver bream
- eastern garfish (huge schools)

I identified those from looking at this web site afterwards. I also saw an unidentified small purpley rainbow fish, a very big fish with a jutting out bottom lip, and some boring-looking fish.

We went to Clovelly and Gordon's on Sunday. It was pretty choppy at Clovelly, and crowded too, but we saw the usual good stuff, although it was too rough to get to that good deepish basin bit near the rock walls/heads bit.

I know that jutting out lip female grouper you're talking about, she looks like Bubba off Forrest Gump, poor thing!

At Gordon's there were thousands and thousands of Garfish, I've never seen so many of one fish all in one place, it was incredible!

We should have tried to organise a group clean up snorkel for clean up Australia day, although I'm not sure how effective it would be to do it snorkeling rather than diving.

I was at Gordon's that day too and indeed, there were many garfish, i was suprised because I hadnt seen a school that large before. Also, that female groper, i think shes missing her upper jaw.. which makes her bottom jaw look like its sticking out. I dont know how it survives.. but it does, because i see it everytime i go to clovelly.
